Saleh Majid

Lawyer Saleh MajidSaleh Majid is practising in Germany as a Middle East Legal Consultant for business laws of Arab countries. He has 50 years of experience, of which he spent 23 years in senior posts as legal advisor, head of legal departments, and director in Preussag AG and its subsidiaries in Germany, where he was in charge of the legal aspects of international and Middle East business as well as international contracting and claims.

He graduated from the faculty of law, University of Baghdad, and joined the Iraqi Bar in 1960. He spent 10 years as a practising lawyer in Iraq and as a legal advisor to a number of Iraqi government organisations and ministries, mainly in charge of international tendering, contracting, and litigation.

In 1963 he was awarded a postgraduate academic Diploma in Law from the University of London, and in 1965 he obtained a Diploma in International and Comparative Air Law from the London Institute of World Affairs.

- Saleh Majid has given legal advice and expert opinion to European and American law firms, companies and courts and arbitration tribunals on legal questions concerning Iraqi and Arab laws, including claims arising from contractual liability and unlawful acts. Clients included Hyundai, Hochtief, Bilfinger + Berger, and UAE Telecom Etisalat.

- He has advised the UN Compensation Commission on issues related to the liability of Iraq for loss and damages resulting from Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.

- He has presented foreign creditors in debt collection proceedings in Iraq.

- He also advised UAE telecommunication company Etisalat on due diligence and acquisition of an Iraqi telecommunication company.

- He advised law firms in London and submitted expert opinion to the courts on billion dollar claims regarding the liability of the Iraqi State for the debts of its public entities.

- Recently, he assisted Leigh Day Solicitors in London and submitted expert opinion to London court in respect of claims filed by Iraqi victims of unlawful arrest and torture against the UK Ministry of Defence involving questions of tortious liability and limitation period.

Saleh Majid is a lecturer and an author of articles on Middle East and Iraqi business laws. He is licensed as a Middle East Legal Consultant in Germany (as Rechtsbeistand) and in the UK. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator and listed as an arbitrator by the Euro-Arab Arbitration System. He speaks Arabic English, German and Persian languages.
